‘Tactile Change’, 2019

An Arts Council funded solo-exhibition at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art. Curated by Hannah Rose, the show discussed the societal challenges we face in a culture rife with seismic changes in outlook and behaviour.

I worked with Plymouth School of Creative Arts to develop and illustrate a story about a zoo which once existed in Plymouth. The elephant was used to raise questions about journeying, migration, transience and containment within a pre and post Brexit landscape.

Language was explored throughout, and was emblazoned on walls, doors and ceramic prints, questioning our response to the very rhetoric of progress. Collaboration, a commitment to the hand-made, participation and social making all came together to help form this body of work.

Tactile Change is the product of Matthew Raw’s deep immersion in our workspace and his creative interaction with the progressive continuum of our learning community.

Plymouth is a hub for contemporary arts within the South West and it has been a privilege to commission an artist as accomplished as Matthew to develop his personal response to the history of the city, as his second national solo show.
